Remediation verification is the process of demonstrating or 'verifying' that the remediation objectives and criteria have been met. The verification plan sets out what evidence will be gathered to demonstrate this, and what records of this evidence are to be retained. Verification typically involves inspection of any barriers or cover systems installed, supervision at key points during such installation, and sampling in excavated or treated areas to demonstrate that the remaining material meets the agreed specification.
On certain projects, verification may also require monitoring during or after the works, for instance to protect close by receptors or to demonstrate that natural attenuation is taking place.
On completion of the remediation project a final verification report should be issued, providing a record of all works undertaken and data collected through any sampling, monitoring, inspection or supervision undertaken.
The report should describe all work undertaken in relation to the remediation works, as well as details of any unexpected conditions encountered and actions taken in response to them.
The verification report will generally be required for submission to the local planning authority in order to discharge any precommencement or ongoing conditions.
